Finally Admitting Guilty Pleasures: Weezer

I’ve known about weezer for years, and can identify most of their big hits. It’s not that they suddenly came out of the ground to me, but I finally broke down and bought the Blue album. Part of me has sort of died, while another part is finally starting to relax. Let me explain.

Weezer is a band that is extremely popular among the general public, but around the music loving, self advertising, general critics of music, I find that they aren’t received well. Those who seem to think that they have the answers to music will shun weezer, and until so recently, I would too. While I stopped judging other people based on music awhile ago (e.g., holding my nose high when it came to music I didn’t like, and as such, was BAD music) and realized that just because I don’t like the band, it doesn’t negate their potential quality, I still couldn’t come into weezer. They’ve got the reputation of being a pop band with catchy songs but with a twist- they get pretty heavy at times, but with thick glasses and sweaters. They’re produced well and the lyrics are -generally- simply just fun. They’re rejection of being high on the musical hierarchy comes from all of this- they don’t seem “serious” enough, their music is to simple without a reason, things of that nature.

But shit- it’s still awesome to listen to. What college student (or recent graduate) doesn’t know the lyrics to Say It Ain’t So? And if it comes on, who doesn’t sing along to it? And finally, who doesn’t have a great time doing so? Some will clearly defend themselves by claiming to be sarcastic, to be subtly making fun of fans and of the band. Give me a break guys- you enjoy the song, you had fun listening to it. Strip yourself of predisposition and give in- weezer isn’t all that bad, and you might actually like it.

I think that’s what happened to me. So I bought the Blue album, listened to it, and certainly enjoyed it. It wouldn’t make my top 100 list, but oh well. I’m not ashamed- I like it, and fuck you if you think less of me, you pretentious (but secretly depressed and self hating with low self-esteem) douchebag.

You listen to shitty music anyway.

  1. Music is a beautiful thing and it shouldn’t make you feel hostile towards other people. Maybe you should just relax and listen to whatever music you want and not worry about whether it meets your elitist definition of “good” music. Also, maybe people wouldn’t judge you if you didn’t judge them. I don’t know for sure, but it might be worth trying.

Anon- missing the point? Whatever. I like my taste in music, but not might like yours. I don’t think less of the music or you as a result.

However, I probably don’t like you anyway.
